How to create a good flash card set

Some flash cards are better than others. Here are some ideas to create an effective flash card set that works for you!

Focus on key concepts and facts

Flashcards work best for learning distinct pieces of information rather than large concepts. Avoid putting too much onto one card, make multiple cards instead

Do not have too many cards in a single set

When you are learning a new set of flash cards, it can be quite overwhelming and counterproductive to have a large number of flash cards in a single set. For difficult and completely new material, multiple sets of four to seven cards each is far better than having a single set with a larger number of cards

Use concise wording on one side and more detail on the other

The “question” side should be a brief cue, while the reverse side provides the full answer or explanation.

Make your own cards to focus on information you personally need to learn

Custom cards are more useful than pre-made ones, but pre-made cards or lists provide a good starting point.

Use imagery and associations

The “question” side should be a brief cue, while the reverse side provides the full answer or explanation.

Modify your cards as needed.

If you realize that one card is not created correctly for your study, don’t be afraid to modify it after you’ve been studying it already
